What data we collect
When you use Akari on WhatsApp
- Your phone number (required by WhatsApp to deliver messages)
- The name you choose to give us (you can use any name or skip this)
- The messages you send to Akari, including text and voice notes
- Your approximate location, if you choose to share it (used only to find local services for you)
- Engagement data such as which features you use, session timing, and feedback you provide
When you visit our website
- Standard web analytics (page views, device type, approximate location) via privacy-respecting analytics
- We do not use tracking cookies for advertising
How we use your data
We use your data to:
- Provide you with personalised support through Akari
- Remember your preferences and conversation history so you don’t have to repeat yourself
- Connect you with relevant local services and support
- Improve the quality of Akari’s support (using anonymised, aggregated data)
- Report anonymised and aggregated outcomes to our partner organisations (e.g. local authorities)
We never share your individual conversations, identity, or personal data with partner organisations. They only see anonymised, aggregated data about how the service is performing overall.
Your anonymity
You can use Akari without giving your real name. While your phone number is required by WhatsApp’s platform, we do not use it to identify you to any third party. You can ask us to delete all your data at any time by typing DELETE in the chat or emailing us.
How we store and protect your data
Your data is stored securely using encryption at rest and in transit. We use industry-standard security measures and regularly review our practices. Your data is stored on servers within the UK/EEA.
AI and your data
Akari uses artificial intelligence to support conversations. Your messages are processed by our AI system to generate helpful responses. We do not use your conversations to train AI models. Your data stays within Akari’s secure environment.
Who we share data with
We share data only with:
- WhatsApp/Meta — as required to deliver messages via the WhatsApp Business API (governed by their privacy policy)
- Our AI infrastructure provider — to process your messages (under strict data processing agreements)
- Our hosting provider — to store your data securely
We do not sell your data to anyone. We do not share identifiable data with advertisers, marketers, or any other third party.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR, you have the right to:
- Access — request a copy of the data we hold about you
- Rectification — ask us to correct inaccurate data
- Erasure — ask us to delete your data (“right to be forgotten”)
- Restriction — ask us to limit how we use your data
- Portability — receive your data in a portable format
- Object — object to certain types of processing
To exercise any of these rights, type DELETE in the Akari chat for immediate data deletion, or email privacy@akarihealth.co.uk for any other request. We will respond within 30 days.
Young people and consent
Akari is designed for young people aged 16–24. If you are under 16, please speak to a parent or guardian before using Akari. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13.
